Lighthouse Blog: Shining light into darkness

How Should We Think About Traffickers and Buyers?

“There is a special place in hell for people like that.”

It’s a statement we hear often when the topic of sex trafficking comes up. It usually comes from a place of deep pain, righteous anger, and a desire to see justice for victims who have endured unspeakable harm. At Lighthouse for Life, we understand that reaction. We feel the weight of the injustice too.

But it’s also a statement we cannot affirm.

Justice and Redemption

At Lighthouse for Life, we believe two things can be true at the same time:

  1. Traffickers and buyers must be held accountable for their actions.
  2. No one is beyond the saving power of God.

Our ministry exists because sexual exploitation is real, devastating, and evil. We work tirelessly to support survivors, advocate for stronger laws, and push for real consequences for traffickers and buyers. Justice matters. Accountability matters. Scripture is clear that God cares deeply about justice and the protection of the vulnerable.

At the same time, the gospel is equally clear: God can save anyone.

The Temptation to Dehumanize

When faced with horrific crimes, it is tempting to categorize people as irredeemable monsters—placing them outside the reach of grace. But when we do that, we step into dangerous territory. Dehumanizing traffickers and buyers may feel emotionally satisfying, but it ultimately contradicts the heart of the gospel.

Jesus did not reserve His grace for the “lesser” sinners. He ate with tax collectors, redeemed prostitutes, and forgave those actively participating in violence and oppression. The cross itself stands as proof that no sin is too dark, too depraved, or too intentional to be covered by Christ’s blood.

If God’s grace has limits, then none of us are safe.

A Heart Problem, Not Just a Legal One

We advocate for legislative change. We believe penalties for traffickers, solicitors, and those who profit from exploitation should be serious and enforced. Laws play an important role in deterrence and accountability.

But laws alone cannot fix what is fundamentally a heart problem.

Sex trafficking is fueled by sin—greed, lust, power, entitlement, and brokenness. You cannot legislate repentance. You cannot pass a law that produces conviction, humility, or transformation. You cannot legislate revival.

Only God can change a human heart.

Why We Pray for Traffickers and Buyers

Praying for traffickers and buyers does not mean minimizing their crimes. It does not mean excusing harm. It does not mean abandoning justice.

It means we believe redemption is the most radical form of justice.

A trafficker who encounters Christ, repents, and turns away from exploitation represents not only a soul rescued—but potentially countless future victims spared. A buyer who is transformed by the gospel no longer fuels demand.

This is why we pray boldly:

  • That traffickers would be exposed and transformed
  • That buyers would be held accountable and brought to repentance
  • That cycles of abuse would end not only through punishment, but through redemption

Keeping Survivors at the Center

Our compassion for traffickers and buyers will never come at the expense of survivors. Survivors deserve safety, healing, justice, and dignity. Period.

Calling for redemption does not silence victims—it honors them by confronting the root of exploitation and working toward a future where fewer lives are harmed.

A Gospel Bigger Than Our Anger

Righteous anger has its place. God Himself is angry at injustice. But the gospel calls us to something higher than anger alone.

If we believe that Jesus saves sinners—and we do—then we must be willing to believe that includes all sinners.

Even the ones we struggle to forgive.

Even the ones whose crimes make our stomachs turn.

Even the ones we would rather see written off forever.

The cross leaves no room for categories of “unsavable.”

Our Prayer

At Lighthouse for Life, we pray for survivors to be restored, for justice to be upheld, and for hearts—on every side of this issue—to be transformed by the power of God.

Because true freedom doesn’t come only through laws.

It comes through redemption.

A Call to Action

This issue is heavy, complex, and deeply spiritual. Ending sex trafficking requires more than outrage—it requires action, faithfulness, and perseverance. Here are four ways you can stand with us:

Pray
Pray for survivors on their healing journey. Pray for justice and protection. And yes—pray boldly for traffickers and buyers to encounter conviction, repentance, and the redeeming power of Christ. Pray for revival in hearts where darkness currently reigns.

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.” — 1 Timothy 2:1

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 Pray for revival in hearts where darkness currently reigns.

Advocate
Use your voice. Support legislation that increases accountability for traffickers and buyers and prioritizes survivor-centered justice. Stay informed, engage with your representatives, and help push for systems that protect the vulnerable.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.” — Proverbs 31:8–9

“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.” — Isaiah 1:17

Give
Your generosity makes restoration possible. Giving to Lighthouse for Life directly supports safe housing, trauma-informed care, advocacy efforts, and long-term healing for survivors. Financial partnership is a tangible way to fight exploitation and build hope.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give… for God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” — 1 John 3:18

Educate
Learn the realities of trafficking and help others do the same. Share resources, attend trainings, talk with your churches, schools, and communities. Awareness—grounded in truth—helps dismantle myths and empowers prevention.

“My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” — Hosea 4:6

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Together, we can pursue justice without abandoning grace, accountability without losing compassion, and truth without losing hope.

Because transformation—real, lasting transformation—starts in the heart.
